PHILLY REGION:

WE ARE A PEOPLE, #NotYourMascot #ChangeTheName

Since the campaign launched in 2013, Native American / Indigenous peoples groups, athletes, sports icons, school boards, city councils, state legislators, media organizations, civil rights groups, religious leaders, Members of Congress and the former President of the United States have all said it is time for the Washington team to make a change.  Not only has the name been flung at our people in hatred, it also refers to the literal “red skin” bounty hunters would collect in order to be paid for the number of Natives they slaughtered. Today the word is a dictionary defined offensive term and is widely acknowledged as a slur – a racist, hateful word used to hurt or disparage someone. Using the word can have severe legal consequences: if one child called another child a “r*dskin,” it would be bullying; if one adult referred to another as a “r*dskin” at work, it would be harassment; if “r*dskin” was used in the course of a crime or scrawled on someone’s home, the perpetrator would be charged with a hate crime. About main organizers in Philly Region:
Indigenous 215 Collective is a group of Indigenous peoples from the western hemisphere living in the greater Philadelphia area.  Our mission is to foster community, promote awareness and education of Indigenous history and contemporary communities, and to support the urgent struggles for Indigenous rights, sovereignty, and self determination in Philadelphia.

Philly with Standing Rock was originally founded as a coalition of Natives and non-Natives in solidarity with the Standing Rock Sioux Defenders to STOP the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL).  Together, these groups work to support one another to raise awareness regarding environmental injustice and to support the initiatives of Indigenous people from the western hemisphere.
